In rallies, media events, press conferences, blogs and op-ed pieces, we are making it clear to the American people that if the insurance companies win, we all lose.
That effort is bearing fruit. Despite the disappointing action of the Senate Finance Committee, pressure for the public health insurance option is building. Polls show strong support for the public option. A majority of the Senate is now clearly in favor. And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is working to figure out how to move a public option through the complicated Senate procedures has said that the final health bill will have a public option. But to make that happen we need to keep the pressure on.
So Iām asking you to come out on Tuesday, October 6, at 11:30 am at 1601 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia to join us as we declare CIGNAās world head quarters a crime scene. (Note that this is a new date as we had to change this action from Monday to Tuesday.)
We think:
⢠Itās a crime that insurance companies rack up profits by denying patients treatment even when doctors recommend it, by discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions, and by keeping premiums and out of pocket costs high so that care is unaffordable even for those who have insurance and
⢠Itās a crime that 64% of all bankruptcies are caused by medical debt. Itās a crime that every 12 minutes someone dies because an insurance company denies them care.
A few of us are going to risk arrest by block the doors to CIGNAās building to show our moral revulsion at their business practices and to, if only for short time, interfere with those practices.
Please come out to show support for our message even if you do not want take part in civil disobedience. RSVP at http://healthcareforamericanow.org/page/event/detail/insuranceactions/4j…
And if you want to learn more about taking part in civil disobedience, please come to a training tomorrow, Sunday, October 4 at 718 Market Street in Philadelphia at 1:30 pm. You are, of course, not obligated to join us in risking arrest if you come to the training.
